Question & Answer

Ms. Mckoy you asked a question, you asked "what stage in pregnancy does drug use impact the fetus the most?" so I went searching and I found this website called Merck Manuals. This website stated that, "The fetus is particularly vulnerable to birth defects between the 3rd and the 8th week after fertilization, when its organs are developing. Drugs reaching the fetus during this stage may have no effect, or they may cause a miscarriage, an obvious birth defect, or a permanent but subtle defect that is noticed later in life. Drugs taken after organ development is complete are unlikely to cause obvious birth defects, but they may alter the growth and function of normally formed organs and tissues."

More Quotes....

"Premature birth occurs in between 8 percent to 10 percent of all pregnancies in the United States." I got this quote from Medline Plus and this quote is stating  just what it said 8 to 10 percent of all births are participants within early births. That is like 1 out of 10 births are premature. i want to know why why these births are so prominent? Then i would like to know is there anything we as a people could do to reduce this high birth rates. After searching this website it lead me to another website called ACOG. ACOG stated that, "Studies found that babies born before the 23rd week of pregnancy were not likely to survive. About one half of the babies born at the 25th week survived. By the 26th week of pregnancy, the survival chances increased to 76%. But most of the babies who survived had serious health problems 18–22 months later." Within this quote ACOG pronounced all of the different survival chances one may have by the week it was born. Then this quote also goes on to say that a year or two after the baby is born it will have a high risk of having a very dis-functional life.

Graph..

This first graph is talking about how the preterm births have been fluctuating for the pass 30 years. Then this top graph also shows how the rates of these births were decreasing for every on but the woman over forty. My new question is why did the rates go down within 2008? The bottom graph to the left is showing the parent ages that these high risk births occur in most. Then the graph to the bottom, on the right, on top of the very bottom, is talking about the way that the baby had to be delivered within the situation. Then the very last graph on the very bottom, to the right, it talks about the race that these births show up in most. From this graph you can see that couples over the age of 45 that are African American have the most preterm births and when these babies are born they are usually born through a cesarean surgery.

Explanation...

This photograph shows a women that is pregnant, and by the look on her face I can tell she is stressed. Then you can see that there is a glass and a bottle of wine on the table. This image shows you how stress plays a major affect on the mother as well as the baby. Do you think maybe if this woman was not stressed she would not drink? The most serious problem with stress is, is that it leads to other things worst that may harm the baby more than the mental tension she already has. Now ask your self again what is worst of the listed: stress that may lead to other harmful thing, drugs, or alcohol.

Quote #3

Studies show that very high levels of stress may contribute to an increased risk of premature delivery or low birth weight babies. Still other studies suggest that overly high stress levels can increase your heart rate, blood pressure and produce chronic anxiety. None of these side effects are good for your baby."  This quote is from womens health care  topics and i chose it because it entirely states my point of stress being a major problem within premature births. Even though stress does not seem as harmful as drugs or alcohol the effects of stress are the same. The Stress can be controlled but not like drugs or alcohol; Stress is not something you have on purpose. Because you cant directly stop stress from happening, the only question now is, What is the most severe and reoccurring reason for premature births of the following: stress, drugs, or alcohol? At this point with in my research i think that stress is worst than drugs or alcohol because stress leads to those things and sometimes even worst.

More Proof..

This is a baby's brain that has been affected by alcohol. This baby is approximately six week old and because of his mother his life wont be the same as the next child. This infant may have different things it cant do physically. This child could also have mental and emotional deliquesces.

"When you are pregnant, it is important that you watch what you put into your body. Consumption of illegal drugs is not safe for the unborn baby or for the mother. Studies have shown that consumption of illegal drugs during pregnancy can result in miscarriage, low birth-weight,premature laborplacental abruption, fetal death, and even maternal death." The American association made this quote and I prefer this quote above any other because it summarizes the consequences of doing drugs while pregnant! This quotes gives you the ends and outs of how it is to do drugs while pregnant. Along with this quote the website provides you with all of the different drugs and their affect including  everything you would want to know about pregnancy. then it gets in to details about how Marijuana better know as weed, stops the the oxygen supply to the unborn baby. Another drug called cocaine causes miscarriages, premature births, and placenta eruptions. Also along with those drugs there are two more called Heroin and Methane. Heroin causes the baby to be dependent on it; consequently, with out the drug the baby may have relapses. Methane on the other hand, makes the babies heart beat increase dangerously

More Insightful Links..

http://www.americanpregnancy.org/pregnancyhealth/illegaldrugs.html

I selected this site as an insightful link because this website directly states the problems that drugs can causes when then a pregnant woman chooses to uses them.  The American association stated that marijuana, better known as weed, cuts off  the placenta oxygen supply to the baby. The association went on to talk about  how cocaine, and how slows down the growth of the fetus; heroin and how it makes the baby depended on  it. This site speaks on more drugs and it breaks it simplifies it.

I decided to use this link because this website has a lot of statistics and facts. The march of dimes said that 4%  of pregnant women use illegal drugs. The march of dimes breaks down the affects drugs has on a baby month by month of using this very harmful projects.

The Quote

Print
American pregnancy stated that, "When you consume alcohol, so does your baby. Alcohol freely passes through the placenta to your baby. Drinking alcohol during pregnancy increases the chance that a baby will be born affected by a Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD). Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) are the full spectrum of birth defects that are caused by prenatal alcohol exposure. These effects are life-long and irreversible. The good thing is that they are 100% preventable." This site prove my points about how alcohol get to your baby and it affects the fetus. FASD is an illness  that causes neurological and mental effects that range in severity. Also particular quote doesn't say anything about how alcohol could make your baby a premature but it does talk about Fetal Alcohol spectrum disorders. That disorders causes many other disorders in neurological structure, growth, and other life threating diseases. The worst part about drinking while your pregnant is that your baby has to suffer for something it even couldn't control.

This Is Like...

This photo shows a mother giving her baby drugs, this is a site viewed wrong by most; moreover, it is the same as doing drugs while pregnant. It is as if the baby smokes and drinks itself. In the image the parent is lighting the cigarette for the baby.Have you seen what drugs can do to person? Then think about how this may affect the babies future before their future even began. Why would anyone in thier right mind give a baby alcohol or, and a cigarette? Should any one who would allows thier infant to do this really be given the responsiblity of child?

What I Want To Know About My Topic

I want to know why people abuse drugs and alcohol? Especially when they are holding another persons life in their hands. Secondly I would like to know if there is a certain amount of drugs or alcohol that you can take that will not affect the baby? If so how much? I also wonder what are the chances that your baby will be born with a birth defect if you use these products? As well I  questioned, what age group of parents where problem occur in the most? And why? I was also curious as to what human behavior patterns among race and gender which revealed the most problems with birth defects. If so, why? I wonder which: drugs, alcohol, or stress, affects the fetus worst? Lastly I pondered, should people known as drug or alcohol abusers take classes to help improve their behavior before delivery? Then If these people refuse to have the proper classes should they have the right to keep their own infant; Even though, they have proven to be irresponsible?

What i Know About My Topic

Premature babies are babies that have been born to early; consequently, these babies bodies may not be fully developed or functional. Preemies are born under weight at times they can be under two pounds and the length of a stick of butter. A baby considered a premature baby is younger that 37 weeks old. Infants that are born early have more prone to having chronic health problems. Often these babies can be born with bronchitis; Sometimes cases can be even more severe, to the point of having parts of their brain missing, blood in the brain, deformed harms, uneven legs, and other types of syndromes. Preterm births are caused by artificial insemination, hypertension, drugs, alcohol, stress, previous sexual transmitted diseases, and physical mishaps. As soon as a preemy is born they go directly to neonatal care. A major milestone is reached when the baby is no longer requires medical assistance, they have reached their original due date, their weight is at least 4 or more pounds they  are allowed to come home. Now that the baby is out of the hospital it will require close monitoring for any symptoms or other issues.

The Story Behind My Topic

On August the 29, 1995 a beautiful baby girl was born to the Scott family. She was named Promise in honor of the challenge of getting her here. Her parents believed that she has been promised and sent with a special calling upon her life. This little girl was born three months earlier than the set date, due to preeclampsia. Promise weighted merely one pound and eight ounces, left to fight and fend on her own. Only through the prayers of her love ones, was she able to survive. Promise made it through the tough times, within 3 months she reach 2 pounds, then 4 pounds, and before you knew it she was a whaping 5 pounds. Even though she was getting healthier there was something still wrong. Her lungs were not fully developed and she could not breathe on her own. I am that that little girl, and I always wonder was there away that my situation could have been prevented. That was the story behind my topic and my question now is what can causes premature babies the most: stress, drugs, or alcohol?
